Are you excited for a cosy Halloween? When speaking to some family friends over the weekend, it became clear that many of us Brits aren’t convinced. “It’s over-commercialised!” was the most common complaint. Along with, “it’s just for kids” and “isn’t it more an American celebration they do big over the pond?”. And yes, I’ll admit it, looking around the supermarkets and seeing the amount of plastic (so much plastic!) tat adorning the shelves, it’s easy to see why some of us feel like turning our backs on it. After all, Christmas is just around the corner – let’s save the ‘tat’ for then!
However, I can’t help feeling a bit miffed that we miss out. Because I have this theory… We go along in life doing the day-to-day. The 9-5. Take the kids to school. Walk the dog. Make a cuppa. Hang the washing out. Visit your parents. Watch some TV. Make dinner. Etc. Etc. And it’s fine. But when our everyday life throws a celebration our way, shouldn’t we embrace it? Do something different – and enjoy it in our own way!
See, that’s why I love Halloween. It’s an excuse to embrace a theme! A spooky theme! And that in itself can be terrific fun. No, for me, it’s not about chaotic parties and elaborate costumes. For our Hoogaly family, we love nothing more than celebrating Halloween in our own cosy, comfy style. A special night with family, it reminds us to take time out from our everyday life and have fun. Because that’s what life should be about, isn’t it?
So… I want to inspire you to do the same! Here are my tips for celebrating Halloween in the best way I know how: comfy, cosy and simple.
Spook yourself silly
Setup your living room for a horror movie marathon. Of course, you need to make a spooky den – with plenty of cushions to hide behind (and throws and blankets to snuggle into!).
We like to pick out a range of movies – so Ed, our son, can watch with us too! Then, when the kids have gone to bed? Amp it up and let the horror truly begin. In fact, you may find that being scared is a pretty romantic night in with your other half.
Eat scary amounts
Oh c’mon, we all know celebrations mean food! Lots of great food. Make a spooky picnic (there’s a lot of Halloween-twists on Pinterest) and bring them into your movie den.
Spooky hot chocolate? Our lovely stoneware mugs are perfect for that spooky-but-cosy vibe.
Dabble in scary decorations
I love indoor candle lanterns at the best of times. But at Halloween, they create the classic spooky vibe. And the best thing? You can use them all year round! So you’re not buying more Halloween tat.
I like to decorate my table lamps with fake cobwebs for a real spooky effect. It’s easy to do – then afterwards, the cobwebs are washed away to return to normality.
Listen to Halloween Hits
From Thriller to Monster Mash, there are plenty of famous songs to dance along to – and we love a kitchen disco. What’s your favourite? Let me know in the comments.
Above all, appreciate an excuse to have fun
This year has been tough on so many of us. So, taking an opportunity of joy is not something to be sniffed at.
Treat Halloween as a time to get together with family again. Or simply, to ‘respark’ your love of cosy home days – baking, crafting, relaxing… whatever.
Because they say “variety is the spice of life”, so putting a different twist on your days around Halloween has got to be something good for us – and our wellbeing (oh, and I once read watching a horror movie could burn off the calories in a chocolate bar! So, what’s not to love?).
We hope this blog inspires you to celebrate a cosy Halloween in your own simple way. Before you go, take a look at the cosy home accessories our comfy online store – and see if any of the wonderful cosy items can help cosy-up your space for the autumn and winter.
