Do you look forward to autumn? After a lovely summer, we do. There’s something about the crisp weather, hot chocolates on café menus and crunchy paths adorned with red leaves that puts a smile on our faces. A shift in the seasons is something we celebrate as a family. And the change is always so welcomed – for it allows us to live a little differently and enjoy some small pleasures of life that we missed during the summer months.
However, autumn doesn’t make everyone feel like this. In fact, autumn can be a sign of duller and darker times – winter. As the days get shorter and winter looms around the corner, many of us suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), and we long for brighter days.
Now in this blog post, we don’t intend to solve that. No, we understand wintery months can be tough – and not fixed by a few decor and home-sprucing ideas. However, we thought we could help by sharing some little ideas to create a cosier and more welcoming space – that can take the edge off the winter blues.
Because, although, these ideas may sound simple, we think appreciating simple joys can make a big difference to your wellbeing.
Softly light your space
It happens every year, yet it always feels like a shocker. After summer solstice passes, we gradually lose daylight, and by October we’re starting to see darker evenings. This can have a huge effect on our wellbeing.
However, by adding some soft lighting into a room, you can turn the fewer hours of daylight into something to cherish. Think of the darker evenings as an opportunity to get cosy early, unwind – and get a good night’s sleep.
Get snug by candlelight
Also, candles! Of course, we love candles all year round – but let’s be honest, they really come into play during the colder months. They make us feel warm and comforted – which has a big boost on our wellbeing front.
Take a look at our tea light holders – a simple way to elevate any space to cosy chic.
Tidy up your mug cupboard
Hm, this is a bit of a funny one! But bear with us… We all talk about ‘spring cleans’ right? But what about a winter sort-out focusing on the things you’ll naturally be using more of during the cooler months.
For us, hot chocolate, flavoured coffees, mulled wine and even more tea all make a greater appearance – so mugs become a big hit in our house. Therefore, each year, reorganise and pick out your faves.
Oh, and while you’re at it, treat yourself to a new mug – and enjoy the simple moment of sipping on your favourite hot drink, all cosy indoors – whatever the weather.
Add layers of snuggly blanket love
Coming in from work, feeling tired… there’s nothing like a cosy blanket draped around your shoulders to be an antidote to colder, darker – and often wetter – weather.
We love adding blankets around our home. From the study to the living room, they are there to soothe us from any winter blues. We wholeheartedly recommend you do the same!
Create a space that nurtures you this winter
Brrr! There’s a chill in the air… which means one thing, autumn is on its way. Oh, how we love this season – and you can too.
This may sound silly but think of it as a hedgehog would. Spending time making their little homes cosy, hedgehogs keep snug and warm in their safe space during winter. Why not do the same?
